Yesterday’s Bupa Great Women’s 10K underlined its status as the largest female running event in the UK with almost 8,000 participants taking part. With fantastic support and buoyant atmosphere throughout the course, the race also showcased Glasgow’s credentials as the city prepares to host the Commonwealth Games.
Susan Partridge, who will be competing over the marathon distance at the Games, secured victory in an impressive 33:53. Second to fourth place was filled by Kilbarchan AAC runners, with Hayley Haining second (35:21), Elspeth Curran third (35:39) and Gemma Rankin in fourth (36:00)
Susan Partridge commented: "I was running by myself for the most part which meant I had to concentrate more on my pacing but the atmosphere on the route really is amazing and the Bupa Great Women's 10K is a very special event. The support at the finish line is brilliant and I thoroughly enjoyed running in front of the crowds in Glasgow, especially in the year of the Commonwealth Games."
Sochi 2014 Team GB Olympian Eve Muirhead and Clyde 1 Traffic & Travel Breakfast Show presenter Cassi were honorary starters for the event before joining the rest of the field. Eve, who finished three minutes under her estimated time, was again quick to praise the support: "This was my first 10k experience and what a great event to start with. I had been told the Bupa Great Women’s 10k was special but I couldn’t believe the electric atmosphere and support out on the course.”
