It's not everyone's idea of marital bliss, but there was laughter aplenty for 23 happy couples at the UK Wife Carrying Championships near Dorking, Surrey recently. The sixth annual staging of the event took place in snow crusted ground over the challenging off-road 380 metre course.
Some competitors used the fireman's lift technique, others went for a simple piggy-back. There was also an unusual role reversal when BBC Breakfast Business Editor Stephanie McGovern carried her 'husband' Mike Bushnell, BBC Sport reporter to the finish line.
The unusual tactic didn't pay off as the television duo finished at the rear of the pack, though Stephanie did have the honour of being the first wife ever to complete the event.
The race winner was Matt Witko and partner Lindsey Finn and they were awarded a £500 prize towards travel costs to take part in the World Wife Carrying Championships this summer in Finland. To watch coverage of this year's race, click here.
