The 2019 edition of the Tour of Fife drew to a close on Sunday (14 July) at Falkland Estate with the final race in the popular series.
The Tour, organised by Fife AC with support from the Morton Running Company, consisted of five individual races held over a five-day period.
Each of the events was in a different running discipline, and, taken together, made a unique challenge embraced by this year's competitors. One runner said on social media at the end of the series that the Tour was ‘as good for competition as it is for trying out different disciplines’.
Another added that the cost of entry to the five events was well worth it, ‘for the challenge of running over different terrain and distances and pushing your limits [and] for the camaraderie and friendly rivalry’.
The first race in the series (Wednesday, 10 July) was the Beach Race: a fast out and back on the West Sands at St Andrews where Fife AC pair Alistair Gudgin and Jennifer Spence collected the main prizes.
Thursday’s event (11 July) was the Hill Race: a climb up East Lomond along a marked trail to the summit, followed by a descent into the Falkland Estate. Ben Hukins and Jennifer Spence led the fields home.
Friday’s event was (12 July) the ‘fast and furious’ Mile Time Trial: a one-mile blast in pairs along Kirkcaldy Promenade, set off ‘in the direction of the prevailing wind’. Alistair Gudgin had his head back in front while Jennifer Spence maed it three out of three.
The last weekend of the Tour started with a 5k Road Race in Glenrothes on Saturday (another Gudgin-Spence double), with the big finish on Sunday: the six-mile trail race on the Falkland Estate where Ben Hukins prevailed ahead of Alistair Gudgin and Jennifer Spence completed a clean sweep.
Entrants could run the full series or as many individual races as they wanted. Times and finishing positions were recorded at each event, with each competitor's times added together to determine the overall series category winners. Prizes were only awarded to those who completed the full series.
Overall winner of this year’s Tour was 2017 and 2018 winner Ben Hukins (Cambuslang Harriers), whose total time for the five events was 1.44.21.
First lady was Fife AC’s Jennifer Spence, who finished her five in 2.00.22.
