The 20th Armagh International 5K Race held on Thursday, February 25 attracted the most exciting entry since the Northern Ireland town's International Sport and Cultural Week started away back in 1975. This year's world acclaimed race attracted some great athletes from across the globe including South Africa, Italy, Finland, France, USA, Poland, England, Wales, Ireland and a strong team from Scotland.
McCormick Just Nicks It
The USA has in recent years come to dominate the Men's 5K with Christian Hesch winning on three occasions and David Nightingale winning last year's event with a new record of 13.54. Although Christian Hesch had to withdraw this year due to injury of the USA still fielded their strongest National team which included Ben Bruce who has recorded a 13.36 5K and, Lucas Meyer who has run 13.50 for 5K. However this year was to belong to England as Nick McCormick, who has recorded a 13.25 5K, lead his countrymen to glory with a time of 13:58. The British Internationalist just beat Irishman David McCarthy who had ran shoulder to shoulder with him throughout the race with the USA's hope Ben Bruce finishing two seconds behind. Strong performances from Mathew Bowser, who finished seventh with 14:08, and Jonny Mellor, who placed eighth with 14:10, saw England take an unexpected Gold.
Top Scot Toole
The Scottish team was led home by 1500m specialist and Glasgow and Edinburgh parkruns record holder Ross Toole (23). The Kilbarchan runner was joined by no less than six representatives of Ron Hill Cambuslang. After the race Toole told www.scottishrunningguide.com "I ran 14:17 to finish 15th. I had wanted to get nearer to 14:10 but I'm happy with my time."
