The Y Has X Factor

finishers at the Yorkshire marathon

Organisers of the Plusnet Yorkshire Marathon are set to repeat the success of the inaugural 2013 event after the pre-sale places for this year's race were snapped up in just five hours. The success of the new Yorkshire marathon was based on an iconic location in historic York, a highly experienced organising team, an ambitious marketing strategy and close liaison with key sponsors and charity partners. And the Run For All team have been quickly into their stride to promote the 2014 race.

The race for a place in the Plusnet Yorkshire Marathon 2014 began at 9am yesterday (Friday 3 January) when the event was officially launched at Clifford's Tower in York. To mark the occasion, a giant 'Y' for Yorkshire took over the ancient tower, in the centre of the marathon's home city of York. The symbol of the marathon was formed by supporters of the event and representatives of the 10 official partner charities which benefit from the marathon.

Yesterday's pre-sale sell-out follows hot on the heels of high demand for the 2013 event - which sold out in just three days. As a result, the capacity for the 2014 marathon on Sunday 12 October was increased to 7,000, from just over 6,000 last year.

The inaugural Plusnet Yorkshire Marathon, last October, was hailed a huge success from all quarters, bringing in up to £2m for good causes and a boost of at least £1m for the local economy. And organisers are certain that the 2014 event in October, which again starts and finishes at the University of York, will be even bigger and better still.

A limited number of places remain for general sale but it is likely that the marathon will completely sell out very early on Monday (6 January). Would-be runners in 2014 are now advised to get online at 9am sharp on Monday to be in with any chance of a place.

Mike Tomlinson, from the Plusnet Yorkshire Marathon, said: "It is amazing that the pre-sale has sold out so quickly. It now looks certain that the remaining entries will sell out exceptionally quickly on Monday, too. We're thrilled at the level of interest and support for the marathon."

Entries for remaining places in the Plusnet Yorkshire Marathon open on Monday (6 January) at 9am prompt. Go to the event website to sign up.
