Fitness enthusiast, Susan Stewart, has set herself the target of completing 50 sporting challenges before she hits the big five-zero on 12 July next year. She is hoping the challenge will help raise awareness about the urgent need for organ donors in Scotland.
The 48-year-old is urging people to donate after her husband Alan's life was saved by a kidney transplant. And Alan - who received a new kidney from his sister Kathleen - feels so well again he's decided to join her and run at jogscotland's four new One Big Weekend summer races.
Susan of Peebles said: "Now he's got his life back again, and, because we both know how important transplants are, we decided to celebrate our 50th birthdays with 50 sporting events. Alan and I both know the huge difference an organ transplant makes."
"It's a great chance to tick four sporting challenges off the list of 50 in just one weekend and I'm really looking forward to all of them. Alan would not be here today if it wasn't for his transplant. Every day three people die while waiting for a transplant. That's a lot of preventable deaths and I'm proud to run to raise awareness of organ donation so more people sign up for the register."
jogscotland's One Big Weekend events are designed to give runners from over 500 jogscotland running clubs a chance to meet up, but the timed runs, which include a 5K for adults and a 1K for kids at each venue, are also open to non jogscotland members.
One Big Weekend race director, Neil Kilgour, said: "One Big Weekend is open to everyone so it's a perfect fit whatever your ability. We're delighted to be working alongside jogscotland to host this new and exciting series of 5k summer races. Come join us for fitness and fun over one fabulous weekend of running."
Each runner will receive a running belt - great for running with keys/cash or a phone. They'll also get a 5k training plan, a medal, goody bag and their results will be posted on the website within 48 hours of the race.
Entries are open now for the One Big Weekend races on August 3 and 4 2013 in Edinburgh, Glasgow, Perth and Aberdeen. To enter go to the jogscotland One Big Weekend website.
