With just over a month until the New York City half marathon, specialist sports travel company Sports Tours International has a limited number of guaranteed entries for the race on St Patrick's Day (17 March). The half marathon is one of the best supported and most competitive races in the world and is a ideal preparation for a full marathon later in spring such as London, Paris, Brighton and Edinburgh.
Last year's event was won by Peter Cheruiyot Kirui of Kenya and past winners have included Brits Mo Farrah, Paula Radcliffe and Mara Yamauchi, as well as Ethiopian running legend Haile Gebrselassie. The course starts in Central Park's West Drive near 64th Street, before running through the heart of New York, then turning right towards the Hudson River and following the water side down the foot of Manhattan.
Sports Tours International said: "Running through the streets of Manhattan, entries for this race are highly sought after and we only have a small number of guaranteed etntries available for this half marathon. If you are targeting a full marathon later in the year, then this is a great race to test your legs on."
As the race takes place on St Patrick's Day, many participants are planning to wear something Irish-related. One such runner is Nell Danell Arsenson McCaffery who spoke about her headgear for the event: "I'm wearing a Guinness hat which not only stops the sweat from running down my face, but also opens beers as it has a built in bottle cap opener"
