Sichel Up For 'Hero' Award

William Sichel coming second in Athens 1000 mile race

On April 6 2010, scottishrunningguide.com brought news of William Sichel, an Orkney ultra distance runner, coming second in a 1,000 mile race in Athens. William has now announced that he is one of three sporting Scots to be in the running to winning a Daily Record 'Our Heroes' award.

The awards ceremony will take place in Glasgow's Hilton Hotel on May 7, and will include presentations to 'heroes' in several categories, including 'Our Little Hero' for outstanding children, 'Our Community Hero' for helpers in local communities, 'Our Emergency Services Hero' for outstanding courage and 'Our Sporting Hero', of which Sichel is one of the top 3 nominees.

An ultra runner since 1994, William Sichel has an impressive running CV, including 8 ultra distance records at World, British and Scottish levels. His race in Athens this year was also a record-breaking time, becoming the fastest man to run 1000 miles in his age group (M55). His finishing time was 13 days: 20 hours: 08 minutes: 1 second, breaking the previous record by more than a day.

Sichel is one of three finalists for this year's 'Our Sporting Hero' award. Last year saw Sir Chris Hoy and Gillian Cooke miss out on the award to 2009's Sporting Heroes winners, the Scottish Men's Curling Team. Tickets are available to buy for the event from the Daily Record 'Our Heroes' Website.
