parkrun UK HQ has confirmed that more than half of the 43 Scottish parkruns will hold additional events on Christmas Day and New Year’s Day.
For some of the newest parkruns, like Loch Leven (1100, New Year’s Day), these festive editions will be their first.
Many of the extra events will be held at different times to their usual editions, so festive parkrunners are advised to consult the ‘Christmas and New Year Compendium’ when they make their plans.
If your local parkrun is one of the events taking a well deserved rest, consider it a perfect opportunity to check out another event close to home, or wherever you’re spending the holidays.
Of the 30 venues that will be hosting festive events, 11 will be putting up the finish line tape on both Christmas Day and New Year’s Day: Aberdeen Beach (0930 Christmas Day, 1100 1 January), Camperdown Dundee (1000, 1100), Elgin (0930, 1100), Greenock (1000, 1100), Aberdeen Hazlehead (0930, 0930), Linwood (0930, 1100), Livingston (0930, 1100), Perth (1000, 0930), Pollock Park (0930, 0930), Stonehaven (0930, 0900) and Troon (0930, 1100).
On Christmas Day runners will only be able to register on one occasion. However, on New Year’s Day, fleet-footed and well organised parkrunners will be able to register two.
None of the 14 Scottish junior parkruns will be held on the two holidays, but children are still welcome to run with adults in the main events, subject to the usual supervision policies.
As always at this time of year, runners are advised to keep an eye on social media in case of cancellations due to poor conditions.
And you if do decide to dig out your barcode from underneath the tinsel or party streamers, please do spare a thought for all the parkrun volunteers who’ve given up their Christmas morning – or headed home from the pub early on Hogmanay – so that you can run. Bring along your best festive smile, and give them your thanks.
