For the month of October, parkrunners across the country made the pledge to support the event’s official charity partner Alzheimer’s Research UK through a Donate Your Time initiative. For the fundraising push, each parkrunner would convert their finish time into a one-off donation to the charity, with parkrun organisers hopeful they could raise £100,000 by November.
ARUK was chosen on the basis that even though they are the country’s leading dementia research charity, it holds a smaller presence in running than many of the charities. With its message of promoting regular exercise, it was also seen as an appropriate fit with the parkrun ethos.
As ever with parkrun, the community spirit shone through and over 2,000 runners donated, meaning the £100,000 target was reached. Ian Wilson, director of fundraising at Alzheimer’s Research UK, comments: “We have been overwhelmed by the parkrun family’s generosity. Thanks to you, we surpassed our £100,000 fundraising target, giving hope to the 850,000 people across the UK living with dementia today, and future generations.”
“Furthermore, national financial services firm Charles Derby was also inspired to join #TeamARUKparkrun, having pledged to raise £50,000. The company has a close association with parkrun, actively encouraging staff, clients, friends and family to sign-up as part of the Charles Derby Vitality Club.”
“This support will make it possible for the charity to invest a record amount in groundbreaking research, funding world-class projects that will lead to the breakthroughs and treatments that are so desperately needed for Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia.”
