This will be one package holiday you'll never forget! A six day trip to South Africa sound nice? How about an 89km run while you're there? Yes? Get your bags packed then!
Sports Tours International is now making it easier than ever for runners to take part in the prestigious Comrades Marathon, and, with over 14,000 people registered already time is fast running out to secure your place at the race.
The Comrades Marathon has been a highlight in the athletics calendar for almost 90 years, stretching from Durban to Pietermaritzburg, South Africa, switching direction between the two cities each year. Vic Clapham founded The Comrades Marathon in 1921 after The Great War, aspiring to keep the memory of his fallen comrades alive. He decided to set a challenge which would test the physical ability of athletes. Starting out with only 34 runners, the marathon has grown exponentially, now attracting tens of thousands of runners and spectators, becoming a national treasure among the South African people.
Next year the race will run downhill from Durban to Pietermaritzburg, making the journey very tough on the legs! The Marathon will take place on May 29 2011, and entrants must complete a 42.2km IAAF accredited road race between May 30 2010 and May 6 2011 to qualify.
Sports Tours International is offering a five night package deal, giving runners three days to acclimatise to the South African weather, and then two days after the race to recover and travel home. The package includes 5 nights stay in The City Lodge Hotel in Durban, and also includes transport to (and, more importantly) from the race to the hotel. For more information and to book, visit the Sports Tours International website - but please note that you will have to secure your own flights to South Africa!
