There are many races in Scotland which are contenders for having the most scenic course, sadly none of these are in Clydebank. A range of 5k, 10k and Half Marathons run through the Dunbartonshire town all of which include at least part of the course running through the local business park. The Scottish Veteran Harriers Club 5K Road Race Championship course is not the exception, quite the opposite. The course is 3½ laps of the business park!
However a little bit of a wind and the warm evening sun provided good racing conditions for the 43 runners on Wednesday 10th June. The organisers advised individual athletes of how many laps they had left to go as they ran round and round the course. Alan Derrick of Calderglen Harriers won the event by 4 seconds from last years winner Paul Thomson of Helensburgh in a time of 16:41, third place went to Robert Soutar. Fiona Matheson was first woman in a time of 17:31 followed by Shona Donnelly of Bellahouston RR in 19:45 and Marina McCallum of Clydesdale Harries third in 20:00.
With medals being awarded for 1st, 2nd and 3rd places in the race and in the various age and gender categories from W35+ to M75+ only 11 of the 41 finishers didn't qualify for a medal. However they did receive a packet of Lee's snowballs.
Youngster Maddie Smillie (F35) running in first SVHC event told Scottish Running Guide that although she found the 3 1/2 lap course psychologically challenging, the friendliness of the fellow runners, organisers and supporters made it one of the most enjoyable races she had ever participated in.
