New Family Mile Means Running For All

Glasgow Life and Bank of Scotland have announced some great improvements to the Junior Great Scottish Run for Saturday , September 1, 2012. Details unveiled on Wednesday (April 18) at the event's launch in George Square confirmed that four new events have been added to the popular 3k challenge - a Toddler Dash, a Family Mile, a Junior Mile and an invite-only Elite Mile. Traditionally held in Glasgow Green the race will now be centred on George Square, Glasgow, offering youngsters their first taste of a city-centre road race.

In the year that Glasgow becomes an Olympic City and with the 2014 Commonwealth Games coming ever closer, the city is keen to encourage everyone to make physical activity part of their lifestyle. This rationale has led to the introduction of a brand new Family Mile event, open to all. Little ones can celebrate crossing the finish line of their very own dedicated event - Scotland's first free Toddler Road Dash, complete with medal presentation for all finishers.

These events complement the already popular 3k and 1.5k, which has been redesigned as a Junior Mile for 2012. Both are aimed at 9 to 17 year olds and regularly attract some of Scotland's top young runners. Some of the country's budding athletes will be invited to compete in a crowd-thrilling Elite Mile, which is expected to see the starlets cross the finish line in around 4 minutes.

Race organiser, Glasgow Life, has also taken the bold decision to move the junior element of Scotland's largest mass participation event to the centre of the city. This will afford young people the atmosphere and excitement the senior race enjoys on Sunday. All races will start on the road around George Square. The surrounding streets will be closed to traffic giving children and young people the opportunity to experience the thrill of a road race.

The shift to George Square will allow a big stage to be erected and a full morning of entertainment to be programmed. This will add to the 'fun day out' feel of the event, encouraging the whole family to come into Glasgow and participate in the Bank of Scotland Junior Great Scottish Run events.
