Laura Muir looks set to miss next year’s Commonwealth Games in Australia to focus on her education. The 24-year-old is currently working on a veterinary medicine degree.
The event will take place in April 2018 to avoid the Australian summer heat and Muir has confessed that means her participation was very doubtful.
“I think it’s not going to be possible. My course runs to the end of April and then I have exams in May so no, I don’t think so.”
Muir’s current focus is on her 1,500m/5,000m double bid at next month’s World Athletics Championship at the London Olympic Stadium. She is continuing her training while studying veterinary medicine at the University of Glasgow.
Earlier this year she won her first two major titles at the European Indoor Championships in Belgrade and is considered by many as one of Britain’s biggest medal hopes.
“I think I’ve shown I’ve got the ability to do both and the timetable works really well in London to do the two events,” she added.
“In Belgrade I proved that I can double up. It’s not quite the same timetable this time but I did well between runs there so I’m sure I can again. It works really well with the 1,500m first in London. That is still my primary event.”
