142 competitors braved blustery conditions at Ardbeg Islay Half Marathon on Saturday (1 August). First held in 1986, the race saw participants head off from the island’s capital of Bowmore to Islay Airport and back in a circular route.
McGeachy Blows Away Competition On Islay
As well as UK runners, there were a number of international competitors at the race from countries including Switzerland, the Netherlands, Germany and Australia. The windy conditions started to die down as participants traversed the undulating course. Fastest male was Stuart McGeachy from Campbeltown RC in 1:18:37. The first female to cross the finish line was Fife AC’s Keren McPherson (1:33:42). Illustrating the event's cosmopolitan field, the midpoint runner was Italian, Viviana Perina, in 1:55:28.
Organiser Kate MacAffer told runABC Scotland: “The race went very well and it was great to see so many runners from far and wide visiting Islay. Everyone enjoyed the Scottish country dancing at the ceilidh afterwards. We hope to see them all here again next year!”
