The Marathon de Ben Nevis on 24 September is a tough 64km journey of discovery circumnavigating Ben Nevis, Nevis Range Mamores and the Grey Corries.
The event is held entirely off-road, encouraging participants to enjoy the wonderful environment and find out about themselves in the process. Runners will have the opportunity to traverse some of the most rugged and isolated areas the Scottish Highlands has to offer. The undulating course is varied with river and stream crossings, sustained climbs, long descents and soul searching splendid isolation.
Organisers stress the Marathon de Ben Nevis is more of an event than a race, though there is a cut-off time of 12 hours to complete the route. Those who are super fit and want to race hard will not be disappointed; the route will definitely test you. Those who see this as a major personal challenge will be able to pace themselves and enjoy the adventure and wilderness of this remote area.
With this challenge comes personal responsibility, which is a big part of the event ethos. In the words of the organisers: “We are taking the bubble wrapping away and letting participants take on this event knowing they will need the motivation and tenacity to get to the finish line.”
