Fresh from watching her daughter Eilish competing at the Commonwealth Games, two-time gold medalist, Liz McColgan, will be volunteering at Glasgow’s Tollcross parkrun tomorrow (Saturday 9 August) as part of the Join In Summer Relay. The nationwide tour of community sports clubs takes place throughout August and will see Commonwealth stars and top athletes muck in with the everyday volunteer roles that make sport possible in the UK.
As part of the Join In campaign, parkrun is encouraging participants to bring a friend to events, so Commonwealth Games gold medallist and former World Record holder over the 5k distance, David Moorcroft, will also be attending the event as Liz’s plus 1.
Rebecca Birkbeck, CEO at Join In commented: “Join In loves working with parkrun, who are such a fantastic example of volunteers helping participants of all ages join in and get active. Liz was one of the first athletes to support Join In and it’s great to have her back with us for 2014.”
As the Join In Summer Relay continues throughout August, clubs will be joined by a number of athletes who all started at volunteer-led sports clubs including gymnast Louis Smith, swimmer Rebecca Adlington, triathlete and iron-woman Chrissie Wellington, decathlete Dean Macey, middle distance runner, Dame Kelly Holmes, sprint and hurdler Kriss Akabusi, Paralympic gold medalist Richard Whitehead, and former rugby international Josh Lewsey.
