Excitement is building for the Ardbeg Islay Half Marathon which returns to the Hebridean island on Saturday (1 August). The race will see participants run from the island’s capital of Bowmore to Islay Airport and back in a circular route.

If their legs are up to the task, participants can enjoy some Scottish country dancing at the post-race ceilidh. One runner who won’t be doing this, however, is Canadian Andrew Swan.
He posted via the event’s Facebook group: “Sorry I won't be there to defend my Top (and also Last) Canadian title from last year. Will be running the pancake-flat Islandigadagurinn 10-mile race from Winnipeg Beach to Gimli, Manitoba, instead. Sadly they won't have Mars bars and Ardbeg at the finish. Best wishes to everybody running on Islay!”
The island also hosts a full marathon on 20 September. The event was held for the first time last year and inspired US runner Robert Kroeger to write a book The Secrets of Islay, which features him and a group of friends running the race.
