The Great Run Company has announced that this year will be the last for their Simplyhealth Great Aberdeen Run, a fairly recent addition to their roster.
The three-year contract, which began in 2017, ends with this year’s race on Sunday, 25 August and will not be extended. The event – which includes a half marathon, a 10k and a family run – is staged by the Great Run Company in collaboration with Aberdeen City Council, VisitAberdeenshire, Aberdeen and Grampian Chamber of Commerce and Aberdeen Inspired.
In a short statement confirming the end of the race, the Great Run Company added: “We'd like to thank all of our partners for their support and the people of Aberdeen for getting behind the event, whether as runners, volunteers or spectators over the last three years.”
The company announced earlier this year that its Great Stirling Run had reached its own finish line, too. Launched as the Stirling Scottish Marathon in 2017, the event attracted thousands during its short life. In 2018, a half marathon was added to the event, rebranded in 2019 as the Simplyhealth Great Stirling Run.
Councillor Marie Boulton, Aberdeen City Council’s culture spokesperson, said of the news: “Thousands have participated in the Great Aberdeen Run since its inception in 2017 and this year’s event will bring more colour and life to the streets of the city. We would encourage anyone who has yet to sign up to add their name to the entry list for the 10k or family run.
“Our thanks go to everyone who has supported the Great Aberdeen Run, both those who have taken part and the residents who have played their part.”
But Granite City runners may not have to wait too long for a replacement. Adrian Watson, chief executive of Aberdeen Inspired, added: “Our vision is still to see a competitive and ambitious running race in our city centre in future years and we look forward to working with partners to make this a reality.”
Half marathon entries to next weekend's race are now closed, but runners can still sign up to take part in the last-ever Great Aberdeen Run 10K until 10am on Thursday 22 August.
