With only five days to go until the Edinburgh Urbanathlon, organisers of the event have set midday today as the deadline for online entries. The obstacle-packed race, which is expected to attract more than 300 runners, have also set midday, Friday, as the last time in which entrants can register over the phone.
Beginning beside Arthur's Seat on Sunday, September 25, the parkour inspired event sees participants traverse a series of obstacles along a 10k run. Competitors will run, wade, dangle, jump, and crawl as they progress through an original course in the Scottish capital.
The 2010 Edinburgh Urbanathon raised £15,000 for Chest Heart & Stroke Scotland (CHSS) and the charity hopes to raise over £20,000 this year. The Glasgow event, which is a slightly shorter route at 7km, attracted 260 runners and raised over £18,000 in June of this year.
One confirmed participant who is more than familiar with crazy obstacle courses is TV's Total Wipeout winner Roy "Rob Roy" Davidson. Roy commented on the event: "For just £40 in sponsorship you and your mates can tackle a totally unique course whilst having the most fun you have had in a long time, and to top it all you'll be raising money for a great cause."
Event organiser Alison Bertram described the Urbanathlon as, "suitable for all levels fitness." Alison, senior fundraiser for CHSS, was coy about the details of this year's course, commenting: "The route and the obstacles are secret until the day so we can't reveal those details but previous runs have involved buses, tunnels, skips, and an inflatable wall!"
For those of a competitive spirit, prizes will be offered for the fastest male, female, and team. In addition, a prize will be awarded for the best fancy dress at the event. All funds raised will go towards helping Chest Heart & Stroke Scotland provide care, information, and support for people in Scotland with chest, heart and stroke illness.
To register for the Urbanathlon before the online deadline, visit the event website. Alternatively, you can contact them at 0131 225 4800 before registration closes on Friday at midday.
