It may not have been the revenge he envisaged after losing his world marathon record, but Wilson Kipsang exacted a mild form of retribution on Dennis Kimetto at Durban’s Umhlanga parkrun on Saturday.
The pair were guest attendees at the inaugural staging of the South African event, based in the KwaZulu-Natal region. Unsurprisingly, the Kenyan athletes posted a 1-2, with Kipsang finishing the 5K in 17:44, one second ahead of his countryman.
While most parkrunners would be delighted with a sub-18 performance, both Kipsang and Kimetto completed each of their 5k splits in under 15 minutes when setting their respective world records.
Their appearance clearly caught the imagination of the locals with over 350 runners turning out for the opening event. Grant Cummings, of Westville AC, finished just behind two of the fastest ever marathon runners in history in 17:51. If that isn’t a claim to fame, I’m not sure what is.
