With numbers more than doubled from last year and perfect running conditions the second Kilmaurs Gala 5k was an outstanding success. Event organiser David Mitchell had done a great job in promoting the race and improving the course from last year. Although the course was not as flat or fast as runners had been led to believe, there were still some great performances at Wednesday's race.
Local lad Gavin Holgarth (25) won the East Ayrshire event in an impressive time of 17:04. Irvine young gun Sarah Munn (17) continued her recent good form by winning the Women's Race in 19:08. Some 43 runners of differing abilities took part in the scenic, mostly off road, race. "Tommy fae Greenock" the fund raising clown who is a feature of many of Scotland's races closed the race and by participating helped to establish the Kilmaurs Gala 5k firmly on the Scottish race scene.
Speaking to SCOTTISH RUNNING GUIDE race winner Gavin Holgarth said: "I really enjoyed the race. The twisting turns, hills and differing terrain made for an interesting course. Well done to the organisers for such a great event."
