Jogscotland Going Strong

West Dunbartonshire jogscotland group

Jogscotland groups throughout the country will be spluttering back into life soon and for people who want to lead a healthier lifestyle but don't know where to start then signing up with your local group could be the best move you've ever made.

jogscotland is supported by the Health Education Board of Scotland (HEBS), scottishathletics and sportscotland. The programme encourages people to gradually increase their activity levels to help improve their health and well-being, and to fight against heart disease, high blood pressure, weight gain and stress.

One area where jogscotland is very active is West Dunbartonshire where there are 20 groups throughout the region with over 180 members. The programme is organised by West Dunbartonshire Council's Sports Development Unit and there are jogscotland groups at the following venues:

Westbridge End Hall, Dumbarton (Wednesday 6:15pm)
All Levels - (Walk to Jog ,Beginners to Advanced)
Alexandria Community Education Centre (Wednesday 6:30pm)
All Levels - (Walk to Jog, Beginners to Advanced)
Dalmuir CE Centre Clydebank (Thursday 6:30pm)
All Levels - ( Walk to Jog, Beginners to Advanced)

jogscotland in West Dunbartonshire starts a new ten week programme week beginning January 17 and runs till March 21, 2011. Come along early to register on the night as the jogging session will start at the times advertised at the various venues. And remember to bring appropriate clothing.

One other interesting development at West Dunbartonshire is the MOT programme which jogscotland is operating in partnership with the Cosmopolitan health and fitness team from West Dunbartonshire Leisure Service, which sees a series of free health checks are being made available.

Maurice Donohue told scottishrunningguide.com: "The health benefits of jogging/running are well documented - a stronger heart, more stamina, increase sense of well-being, greater energy and confidence, and reduced stress. However it is a wise precaution to get checked out prior to starting jogging/running to find out what shape you are in and what you are capable of.

"Our MOT test is a mini fitness assessment that takes about 20 minutes to complete and measures overall level of fitness and your lifestyle. During the assessment a measurement of your height and weight, blood pressure, lung capacity and efficiency, heart rate and body fat percentage (optional). A fully qualified member of staff will inform you of your level of fitness in comparison to people of a similar age."

There are limited spaces for the Health Check assessments, so in order to secure your Health Check, please Maurice Donohue (see contact details above).
