Comedian and Join In patron, Eddie Izzard, is encouraging people to volunteer at their local parkrun by threatening to tickle them. The multi-marathoner has already played his part by volunteering at Chelmsford parkrun in Essex.
In a YouTube video filmed at Meadowbank Stadium in Edinburgh, he urges parkrunners to help out, saying: “Volunteer! It’s just a morning thing. You work with other people, you’ll get to know people, it’ll be fun! It’s not much work, it’s easy to do. Everyone can do it. If you don’t do this, we will track you down and we will tickle you.”
The new plus one scheme from Join In encourages parkrun regulars and newcomers to bring a friend to help out at at their local event. The weekly 5k timed parkruns are run entirely by volunteers and work closely with Join In, a London 2012 legacy charity that puts more volunteers into community sport. Over 50,000 runners take part in 5k parkruns and 2k junior parkruns every weekend – more than the number of London Marathon participants.
