Hundreds of runners will head to the island of Cumbrae in just over a month to participate in The Fantasy Island 50. The event on 21 September gives entrants the option of running between one to five laps around the island with one lap being just over 10 miles.
The 'Fantasy Island 50' run is the main annual fundraising event for charity Michael's Movers for Parkinson's - raising funds and providing support for both Parkinson's sufferers and their carers in Scotland. Starting from the town of Millport, the course is flat and scenic with joggers, runners and elite athletes all welcome. The race came about when Michael's Movers co-founder Maria Righetti ran 50 miles round Cumbrae to celebrate her 50th birthday.
Maria explained: "Every year I like to do something different. So when I turned 50 I ran 50 miles and the following year my husband and I were married 30 years so I ran 30 miles on our anniversary."
She is now attempting to run 2013 miles in 2013 for Parkinson's Disease: "My goal is to raise £2013 but I really want to raise a lot more than that."
