Edinburgh is gearing up for a busy weekend of running with thousands of competitors set to take part in the Bupa Great Winter Run. The city will also play host to the annual International Cross Country Race, with numerous top athletes looking to impress in the lead up to London 2012.
Set in the stunning surroundings of Holyrood Park this Saturday (January 7), the Great Winter Run will see runners put their New Year's resolutions in to practice with a challenging 5k. An undulating course, the route takes in some of the capital's most popular attractions, including the iconic Arthur's Seat.
Taking place a few hours after the 5k run, the cross country race will see some of the world's best distance runners battle it out in an international team format. This year's race will see the return of Olympic world record holder Kenenisa Bekele after a two-year absence. Bekele will be joined by fellow Olympic gold medallists Asbel Kiprop and Brimin Kipruto.
Regarded as one of the best cross country events, the competition will also act as a great platform in which Olympic hopefuls can stake their claim for a place at London 2012. Scottish runners Freya Murray and Steph Twell will be taking part in the senior women team challenge, while the men's squad includes Kilbarchan's Derek Hawkins.
Entries for the Great Winter Run are still open and you can register by visiting the event website. If you are keen to see how the GB and NI side get on this weekend, you can watch the International Cross Country Race live on BBC1 from 13:00pm on Saturday.
