The Nike+ Run Club in Glasgow became the most active in the UK as it surpassed 15 other competitors in a recent Every Mile Counts Challenge. Organised by Nike, each group, consisting of 70 members, was challenged to cover the most miles over the course of 29 days.
From February 6 to March 4, 70 Glaswegians demonstrated their enthusiasm - and competitiveness - for running as they covered a massive 4475 miles. Of the 15 other teams, Nike's flagship store in London came closest to reaching their Scottish counterparts, clocking up 3,657 miles. The Exeter group came in third position with 3,023 miles.
The challenge culminated in a UK wide 'make every extra day count' run on February 29, where 50 Glaswegian runners turned out to add an extra few miles. Top contributor to the team was Shazad Hakim, who covered an impressive 388 miles, a distance that translates to over a half-marathon each day.
One of the members of the Glasgow team, George Lyons, commented: "This is the best runclub in the UK. Nothing to do with winning the challenge, it's the spirit, the people and the enthusiasm." Nike+ Run Club Glasgow meets at 6pm on Thursdays and 10am Sundays, is suitable for runners of all abilities and is free of charge.
