With the Glasgow Commonwealth Games just around the corner, new figures show more Glaswegians are being active than ever. In the nine months to 31 December, there were 4.6m visits to Glasgow Life sports venues and a recent report highlights a huge increase in the number of people taking part in sport and exercise.
The Great Scottish Run attracted 23,000 entrants in October last year - up 2000 on the previous year. So far in 2013/14 almost 1600 people have completed coaching courses - up 53% on the same period last year, and attendances at Active Health Programmes showed a 19,000 increase on the previous year.
In addition to this, there were 80,000 attendances at the Emirates Arena’s gym and 73,000 at its fitness classes. The number of junior clubs Glasgow Life is assisting also continues to grow and the number of volunteers working with the clubs has also increased. The number of Glasgow Club direct debit membership has gone up by almost 14% to 33,000 people.
