The world's oldest marathon runner, Fauja Singh, has confirmed he will be taking part in Saturday's Valentines parkrun in Ilford, Essex. Fauja, who will be 101 years old on Sunday, is incorporating the 5k run into his training programme for the upcoming Virgin London marathon.
With seven marathons and more than 500 races under his belt, all completed after his 89th birthday, Fauja has become a cult figure in running circles and has received worldwide acclaim.
Event director at Valentines parkrun, Rory Marriott, commented: "I am absolutely ecstatic about the news and Saturday can't come fast enough for me this week. It is a huge honour for everyone at Valentines and for parkrun as a whole to be able to help such an inspirational runner."
With Fauja's birthday on Sunday, this will be the last event he takes part in before hitting another milestone. Rory continued: "This will be Fauja's final run as a spritely 100 year old so the best way to honour the occasion would be for us to have 100+ runners."
