Runners looking for PB opportunities at half marathon distance have a great option on Sunday, 5 August at Helensburgh when local club Helensburgh AAC hosts a popular running festival which includes the feature half marathon with 5k and 2k fun runs.
Attracting around 500 entries and incorporating the West of Scotland District half marathon championships, the main event, sponsored by Babcock, will be the first race to get underway, at 9.30am. The half follows a scenic route along the seafront, travelling up to Faslane Naval Base before returning into the town and finishing just outside Helensburgh swimming pool. The flat route offers good chances for runners to record fast times.
The 2k and 5k fun runs were staged for the first time last year and proved a hit with competitors young and old(er). The idea behind these races, which start at 9.35am, is to involve both children and adults who want to pull on their trainers, get fit and have fun. There is a race for every member of the family and the Babcock Helensburgh AAC running festival offers a great day out for all at the pretty west coast town.
The 2k race costs £2 to enter and is open to children aged between 9 and 15. This race will run from the swimming pool in the direction of the Commodore Hotel. Children under the age of 9 may also enter, but must be accompanied by an adult. There is no entry charge for the accompanying adult. The 5k race costs £5 to enter and is open to anyone over the age of 15. This route follows the same course as the 2k but goes out to the sailing club.
For further entry details and to download an entry form for either the half marathon or the fun runs (there is also a facility to enter the half marathon online), please visit Helensburgh AAC website.
Organisers are grateful to their title sponsor Babcock for their generous support and also to Helensburgh Toyota, AG Barr and Run4it who all back the running festival.
