To celebrate Olympic year, organisers of the popular Dunblane Hydro Road Race have announced the launch of a new event. Scheduled for May 27, participants aged between 9 and 16 years old will run a distance of 1 mile, allowing them to complete the course in enough time to cheer their parents and older friends along in the 7.5 mile competition.
Starting and finishing at the Dunblane Hydro Hotel, organisers hope the 1 mile race will encourage youngsters to get involved and make the event more family-orientated. Fresh from their successful performance at the Forth Valley Schools Cross Championships, pupils from Newton Primary are already looking forward to the event in May.
Shonagh Gordon, who is on the organising committee for the event, commented: "We've talked about holding a youth event for a while, but with the London 2012 Olympics this year we thought now was the prefect time to do it." She continued: "All proceeds from the event go towards funding sports and athletics for kids in the local area so adding a youth race to the already popular adult event seemed like a great idea."
Now in its fifth year, the event has regularly attracted over 200 competitors. The 2011 race saw Andrew Butchart of Central AC take first position with a time of 40:38, while Bezunesh Deggefa was fastest in the female field in 49:59.
