Each weekend, around 70,000 avid, first-time and occasional parkrunners all set aside a couple of hours of their Saturday morning to take part in a 5k at their local park. Until the end of October, the parkrun community is inviting each of its members to support Alzheimer’s Research UK through their Donate Your Time initiative.
Earlier this year, Alzheimer’s Research UK became parkrun’s first official charity partner. This was decided on the basis that even though ARUK is the country’s leading dementia research charity, it holds a smaller presence in running than many of the charities. With its message of promoting regular exercise, it was also seen as an appropriate fit with the parkrun ethos.
To support the charity, each parkrunner can convert their finish time into a one-off donation to the charity. After the Saturday run at their chosen event, members will be emailed their results as usual but with a Donate Your Time banner attached. This will redirect to a website where you can donate your time, or whatever you can.
The campaign launched last Saturday (10 October) and over £11,000 was raised. parkun organisers are hopeful that by the end of the month they will be able to reach the target of £100,000.
