A wheely engrossing contest took place on Sunday (18 December) as cyclists and runners battled it out at the Cyclists v Harriers event in Irvine, Ayrshire. The race, held by Irvine Running Club, is approximately five miles, held over grassland, moorland and pathways at Irvine Sports Club and on Irvine Moor.
To try and make the event as fair as possible there were various obstacles that participants had to contend with. Nonetheless, the top three finishers were all cyclists with Brian Yates of Carrick Cycle Club finishing first in a time of 25:16, followed by Steven Currie (Glasgow Ivy Cycling) in 26:21, and JP Baxter of Ayr Burners Cycle Club in 26:45.
Currie edged out the fastest runner, Richard Mair of Kilmarnock Harriers, by one second. The fastest female was Catherine Logan of Fullerton Wheelers in 32:02 followed by runners Natalie Stevenston (32:28) of Fusion Triathlon Club, and Ayr Seaforth’s Laura Wallace (32:59).
