Around 30,000 runners are getting ready for Edinburgh Marathon Festival with just days until the event this weekend (24-25 May). The festival will see several athletes taking part as preparation for this summer’s Commonwealth Games.
Scottish running star Hayley Haining will compete in the EMF half marathon as part of her training for the Commonwealth Games marathon in Glasgow.
Commenting on her place in the race, Hayley said: “Edinburgh Half Marathon is an ideal race for my build up to the Glasgow 2014 Marathon. It has a fast international field and is an ideal opportunity to race on home soil before Glasgow."
Fellow Scot, Derek Hawkins, who is also selected for the Glasgow 2014 marathon, will take part in the EMF 10K race on Saturday as part of his Commonwealth preparation. He will be joined in the 10K by another Glasgow 2014 hopeful - Harry Summers. 23-year-old Harry is the reigning Australian road 10k champion and will be competing in the 10,000m event in Glasgow.
Harry revealed that he will have double reason to celebrate if he wins in Edinburgh: "I am delighted to be taking part in the EMF 10k. I’ll be celebrating my 24th birthday while in Scotland and thought a trip over before the Commonwealth Games would be the ideal way to get a feel for the atmosphere and taking part in Edinburgh is a huge bonus."
The festival features seven races – two junior races, a 5k and a 10k on the Saturday, with the half and full marathons held on the Sunday.
