The countdown to the Great North Run on 13 September has already begun, and one woman who will be among the thousands of participants is TV presenter, Carol Vorderman. The 54-year-old former Countdown number cruncher is raising money for Marie Curie as a tribute to former Countdown host Richard Whiteley who died 10 years ago.
Carol’s Countdown To Great North Run
She will be running alongside Whiteley’s ex-partner Kathryn Apanowicz, and Look North news presenter Christa Ackroyd.
Kathryn said of Whiteley: “I think he would be proud of us, if he were still here he would be sat on the finish line having a good old laugh at us. He was always positive about everything. One of the things I will take away from him is that he always had a smile and that’s something I do now. There’s no point in getting down about things in life.
“One of the things he used to call us three was his ‘quality birds’. That was his humorous nickname for us and so it’s something we’ve adopted and that’s what we’re running as. We’re calling ourselves Whiteley’s Wanderers and I think that after a few miles we’ll be doing just that - wandering all over the place, which I think would make him laugh.”
