To Usain Bolt, Paula Radcliffe and Michael Johnson add the name James Nielsen, for running has a new hero. The Canadian set the new world record for the Beer Mile on Sunday at a track in California, also becoming the first ever to smash through the five minute barrier for the discipline, which is unrecognised by the International Olympic Committee.
For those not familiar with the Beer Mile, it involves four laps of a 400m track each preceded by a full beer. Whilst Nielsen's achievement is unlikely to reverberate around the world like the first ever sub four minute mile by Roger Bannister, it is well deserved of a raised glass in celebration across the international running community.
His achievement, recorded by his wife for posterity on YouTube has since been officially recognised by the global authority on such matters www.beermile.com
