Banish The January Blues In The Bahamas

Runners looking to banish the dreaded ‘January Blues’ will have the perfect opportunity in 2018, as the Sunshine Insurance Marathon Bahamas (SIMB) returns for its ninth successive year.

Held in capital city of Nassau, the award-winning endurance event has been ranked as one of the 50 best marathons in the world outside the UK and offers competitors stunning ocean views, powdery sand beaches, azure skies and a mostly flat course.

An event renowned for attracting runners from all over the globe, the 26.1-mile race has seen everything over the years – ranging from marriage proposals to army veterans running with rucksacks.

SIMB features three events, the marathon, half marathon and a four-person relay. The Bahamian weather in January presents ideal winter running conditions, with cool temperatures in the early morning.

After crossing the finish line, runners can cool down in the ocean or pull up a beach chair on the beach, opposite Race Village, which is typically packed with participants in search of beer, water, food and giveaways.

The event is popular with overseas runners, as demonstrated by almost 30% of the 2017 participants being tourists.

Leigh Schmit and Chen Lo crossed the finish line as the top male and female finishers respectively. 44-year-old Schmit, from New Hampshire, recorded a time of 2:52:21, and Lo, 33, who resides in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, clocked 3:17:57.

SIMB takes place January 14 2018 at 6:00am. To register, visit the event website
