Top Glasgow club Bellahouston Roadrunners staged a major new event earlier this month in Glasgow which attracted 100 plus members and friends. The cleverly named 'B in the Park' festival, staged at Pollok Park included a number of novelty events including a 'challenge' race, pram race and toddlers fun dash, before a barbeque at the Old Barn, Pollok Stables.
The fun programme included the 'challenge' which asked teams to complete different tasks including throwing and catching eggs, and racing round a 60m lap after drinking fizzy drinks, eating crackers, and crème brulee. Members Oscar Wild (no seriously!) and Brendan Moriarty, the cunning event architects.
More conventionally the B in the Park schedule included 100m and 200m sprints for men and women, as well as a 3 x 1 mile relay - racing round a loop which circled the centre of the park. Back to the fun theme and the fiercely-contested 200m pram dash and toddler races/activities were highlights, as was the programme of children's events including face painting.
Club president Robert McEwan who leads a youthful and enterprising committee told scottishrunninggude.com: "B in the Park was a well-organised and a well-supported colourful sports day, enjoyed by members, family and friends. The committee of Bellahouston Roadrunners would like to thank all those who contributed to the success of the event."
Social secretary Tammy Ward, the organiser of B in the Park said: "I'm delighted at how the festival went. The sun shone throughout the day and the park was decorated with bright coloured balloons and purple banners bearing the club name. Everyone had a fantastic time. We train at Pollok Park in the summertime, doing speeds sessions in different parts so it was nice to just be running for fun, although a few members kept their competitive edge! I hope this festival can become a regular event for the club."
Bellahouston Roadrunners was founded in 2000 and is currently 160 strong with members competing regularly at distances from 5k to ultra-marathon; new members are warmly welcomed. The club stages two major events at Bellahouston Park - the Bella 5K (now coupled with a 10k contest) is held on Sunday 1 September, while the Jimmy Irvine Bella 10K is the autumn highlight on Saturday 9 November.
Bellahouston Roadrunners will be the profile club in the In Your Area section of the autumn edition of SCOTTISH RUNNING GUIDE.
