Excitement is building as Aberdeen counts down the days before this Sunday’s (27 August) Simplyhealth Great Aberdeen Run. This brand new running event includes a half-marathon, 10k and family run.
The inaugural race takes place the day after the Celebrate Aberdeen parade. Starting and finishing on Union Street in the heart of the city centre, thousands of runners will take on a route that skirts through the most scenic parts of the Granite City.
Famed for its sparkling architecture, Aberdeen is lined with classic granite buildings as well as an abundance of museums, galleries, parks, and gardens. The city is cosmopolitan with plenty of exciting festivals and events happening all year-round creating a distinct cultural offering. With its own beach nestled only a stones throw from the city centre, ships dock in the working harbour and regularly spotted are the dolphins that leap at the harbour mouth.
Among those taking part are Aberdeen-based athletes John Roach and Jim Tole, who will go head-to- head in an attempt to set a new world record for the fastest half marathon time wearing a kilt.
Jim said: “I didn’t want to miss the first ever Simplyhealth Great Aberdeen Run and had planned to use it as a training run. But now that I have the opportunity to set a world record it’s very exciting.
“Running in Aberdeen is always fantastic and the team at the Great Aberdeen run has done a particularly good job in shaping a really great route.”
Entries to both the half marathon and family run are now sold-out, however you can still be part of the event by entering the 10k via one of Great Run’s official charities.
