Almost 500 runners toed the line for the Glasgow Running Network 5k Fun Run yesterday at an overcast Bellahouston Park. The event attracted three times the numbers that took part in 2009 - a considerable achievement given the rival attractions of the popular parkrun staged weekly at nearby Pollok Park.
Ross Bark won the men's race in 17:40 and Jane Galt was first in the women's event in 22:21. Thomas Armstrong completed the event in 1:09:58 and Martha Harrington was the midpoint runner in 32:54.
Race organiser Louise Morgan of the Glasgow Running Network was delighted by the success of the 5k. She told scottishrunningguide.com:
"This is a relatively new event and we're pleased that over 600 entered. The 5k is now an important staging post for runners in both the Ignis Asset Management Women's 10k (May 9) and the Men's Health Forum Scotland 10k (June 20). It was great to see a mixed field of men and women and runners of different abilities taking part.
"A big thank you to all Glasgow Running Network coaches and City Council staff, particularly the team at the Palace of Arts. They all worked to make yesterday's event a big success."
