Man of marble, Dave Heeley was in Scotland this week laying the groundwork for the northern leg of his planned 'Blind Dave's Top 2 Toe' epic fundraiser. The uber-endurance runner is attempting to run 10 marathons in 10 days as part of a 1,000 mile trip from John O'Groats to Land's End - the miles that he isn't running he'll cover by bike.
The Midlands fundraiser completed an epic 7 marathons on 7 continents in 7 days in 2008, this remember despite being blind, which saw him run legs in the Falklands, Brazil (Rio), USA, (Los Angeles), Australia (Sydney), Dubai, Tunisia and in London.
Now the irrepressible Dave is planning his 1,000 mile trip to raise funds for Macmillan Cancer Support. Dave says: "2011 marks the charities 100th anniversary. For a number of personal reasons - I want to raise awareness and lots of money.
"Cancer's effects touch all of us. I lost both my father and father-in-law, and then lost my last guide dog to cancer. Very recently it's terrible consequences hit home again when it claimed the life of a long time friend of over 35 years. Staggeringly one in three people develop cancer during their lives. That's a frightening statistic!
Dave's 10 day super challenge starts on August 10 to celebrate Macmillan's 10 decades in existence. And what a challenge! Each day will start with a marathon run of 26.2 miles, then a cycle to the next destination - an average of 75 miles. Just in case you were worried, Dave will be on the back of a tandem.
The itinerary starts with a marathon out of John O'Groats before a tandem ride to Inverness. The following morning, once again a marathon, then the remaining miles on to Loch Lomond by bike. Next day it's off from Loch Lomond, with yet another marathon, followed by a cycle ride onto Gretna Green. Over the next four days Dave will travel through Lancaster, Stoke, West Bromwich, Weston-super-Mare, Okehampton, Truro and, finally, Lands End.
So John O'Groats to Lands End (JOGLE), Blind Dave's Top to Toe. One man, 10 marathons, nearly 1000 miles, and one tandem. Macmillan Cancer Support is asking for your help to make this challenge a great success for the charity.
