The Simplyhealth Great North Run’s aim to have all of the 193 UN recognised nations represented at September’s event has received a boost with three new countries signing up. Morocco, Azerbaijan and Israel are some of the latest nations to be represented, taking the total to 122.
After succeeding in becoming the first ever competitive race to record one million finishers three years ago, the Great North Run set its sights on this ambitious new project in 2016. As race day came into sight, the event’s global scope grew broader and it managed to host 178 of the 193 nations.
Now, with a little less than three months to go until the 2017 staging, organisers are hopeful they can surpass the record set last year. In order to meet this target, The Great Run Company is looking for support from the worldwide running community to recruit members from the lesser known countries.
Brendan Foster, The Great Run Company chairman, said: “Last year's Great North Run was a true celebration of runners from all around the world. That so many of our Great World Run participants still stay in touch underlines the spirit of togetherness that was achieved.
“We're looking forward to trying this again in 2017 and we hope that we can bring in many more people from across the globe in this celebration of running that reinforces our position as the World's Favourite Run.”
