Hawkins Heads Up Scots Squad

Derek Hawkins

Olympian Derek Hawkins will lead Scotland’s charge for victory at the Lillebaelt Half Marathon next month. The Kilbarchan athlete, who competed in the men’s marathon at last summer’s Olympic Games in Rio, is one of the six Scottish runners who will travel to Denmark for the event on Saturday 6 May.

Also competing for the team are Scottish 5K champion Mark Mitchell (Forres Harriers), Jenny Bannerman (Inverness Harriers), Gemma Rankin (Kilbarchan AAC), Cameron Milne and Jenn Wetton (both Central AC).

The Scots will be looking to follow up on an impressive showing at last year’s event in which they performed very well despite difficulties caused by high temperatures and strong winds. Hayley Haining took the runner-up spot while Andy Douglas finished third.

David Nielsson of Sweden won the 2016 event, with Denmark’s Jessica Draskau-Petersson claiming victory in the women’s race.
