One of Britain’s most successful judo stars, Gemma Gibbons, will officially start the Scottish Half Marathon on Saturday 6 September. The 27-year-old stunned the world when she won a surprise silver medal at London 2012 and delivered a world class performance at the Glasgow Commonwealth Games to secure her second silver.
Almost 4,000 runners from both the UK and abroad have already signed up for the Scottish Half Marathon. Those looking to take part have until Wednesday 27 August (5pm) to enter with a charity place.
Many runners are fundraising for a host of good causes including official charity Cancer Research UK. Every single one of the 200 affiliated charities offers runners vital support and training advice in the build up to the big day as well as tips on how to hit your fitness as well as fundraising goals.
Kathryn Hurrell from the Sports Team at Cancer Research UK says: “We are thrilled to be the official charity and cannot wait to join Gemma, one of our Cancer Research UK sports ambassadors, at the start line of the first ever Scottish Half Marathon! Gemma is a huge inspiration to so many and I am sure will offer that last minute boost of support to all those taking part in this brand new running event. With her recent success at the Commonwealth Games in Scotland, Gemma is sure to have some encouraging words of wisdom for all of our runners so make sure to join our team before the deadline on Wednesday!”
