Andy Douglas showed no signs of feeling the pressure as he secured victory at Saturday's (13 May) UK Inter-Counties Senior Hill Championship, held on a course in the Broughton Heights in the Borders. The pre-race favourite set the pace from the early stages in what was a highly competitive field, and crossed the line 19 seconds ahead of his closest rival.
Pushing Douglas were Graham Gritswood (Scotland Central) and Max Nicholls. However, despite their best efforts, neither could close the gap and the Inverclyde AC man pulled away on the run-in back down the valley – clocking a time of 40:24.
Chris Arthur (Bowland Fell Runners), fifth overall, led home a strong Lancashire team to the team title – one point ahead of Yorkshire in second and five points ahead of Scotland East (Andrew Douglas, Tom Martyn, James Waldie) in third.
The 2011 Commonwealth Mountain Running Champion Lizzie Browne (Cumbria) also lived up to her status of pre-race favourite, finishing 21 seconds ahead of GB international Katie Walshaw (Yorkshire) after recording a time of 47:41.
Scotland Central’s Catriona Buchanan backed up her recent good form, by finishing third with a time of 48:10.
The women’s team event was also very close with Yorkshire narrowly overcoming their very strong rivals Cumbria by only two points. Scotland East (Georgia Tindley, Charlotte Morgan, Jill Stephens) were also very much in the mix, finishing in third. Scotland West (Katie White, Clara Horswell, Christina Rankin) finished fifth.
