Kirui And Kiplagat Dominate Boston Marathon

Boston Marathon champions 2017

Wheelchair records were broken in warm conditions at the 121st Boston Marathon on Patriot's Day (17 April) in Massachusetts, USA, as Kenyans Geoffrey Kirui (2:09:37) and Edna Kiplagat (2:21:52) claimed prestigious titles in the main race. A helpful following wind in the closing stages pushed Swiss wheelchair winners Marcel Hug (1:18:04) and Manuela Schar (1:28:17) to phenomenal world best performances.

The Boston men's race saw Kirui ease away for victory from a determined Galen Rupp (USA, 2:09:58) in the final two miles. Rupp, three times an Olympian, led six Americans into top ten places in a fine showing by the host nation. Japan's Suguru Osako (2:10:28) was third overall.

Kiplagat made her Boston debut a winning one after earlier successes at London and New York. Rose Chelimo (Bahrain, 2:22:51) was a distant runner-up with USA celebrating more success as marathon debutante Jordan Hasay (2:23:00) and Desiree Linden (2:25:06) were next to finish. Hasay's run was the fastest ever debut by an American woman.

The top three British men who had qualified to run Boston were Christopher Ashford (Birmingham BRAT, 2:33:45), Paul Piper (West 4 Harriers, 2:39:13) and M40 Kojo Kyereme (Shaftesbury Barnet Harriers, 2:39:39). Sorrell Walsh (Victoria Park & Tower Hamlets, 2:54:50) led the women with a PB by nearly five minutes as 40 GB athletes broke three hours.

There were 30,074 entries from every US State and more than 80 nations at the start in Hopkinton as the sun shone and the temperature rose to an uncomfortable 79°F (26°C) around half distance.

City officials announced plans for permanent memorials to mark the sites where two bombs exploded on Boylston Street at the finish of the 2013 Boston Marathon, killing three people and injuring at least 200. The latest race reinforced the perseverance and indomitable human spirit that has come to personify this world famous Patriot's Day race.
