Auckland To Hit The Road At Great Edinburgh Run

Great Edinburgh Run

After her cross country heroics on the world and European stage, Rhona Auckland is set to test her road-running skills in more familiar surroundings as she takes on the Morrisons Great Edinburgh Run on Sunday 19 April. The 21-year-old University of Edinburgh student backed up her European Under 23 cross country victory in Samakov, Bulgaria in December with a top 20 placing at the IAAF World Cross Country Championships in Guiyang last weekend.

Running against formidable East African opposition in the senior women’s race, Auckland finished 19th in China - just one place behind British team-mate Gemma Steel, the reigning European senior cross country champion.

The Banochry Stonehaven Athletics Club runner plans to test herself over ten miles at the Morrisons Great Edinburgh Run. Auckland has not raced farther than 10km (6.2 miles) before, so the race will be a step into the unknown for her.

She said: “It’s part of my preparation for the summer. I’m hoping to focus on 5,000m and 10,000m on the track but I’m also working towards running a half marathon on the road. That’s something I’d like to do at some stage, so ten miles will be a good stepping stone towards that.

“I do love running in Edinburgh so it’s an ideal race for me. I’ve been told that the course is hilly and not to worry too much about the time but I’m really looking forward to it.”

Entries for the Morrisons Great Edinburgh Run are still open at the event website.
