McColgan and Abu-Rezeq Feast On Success At Percy Pud

Eilish McColgan in action

Mohammed Abu-Rezeq and Eilish McColgan capped what has been a highly successful 2016 for both runners with victory and a course record to boot at Sunday’s (4 December) Percy Pud 10K in Sheffield. McColgan, in particular, will likely be delighted with a performance that saw her set a PB and comes on the back of her triumph at last month’s Age UK Leeds Abbey Dash and fifth place at the Rio Olympics.

Organised by Steel City Striders, the Percy Pud has seen its status steadily rise since 1993 and is now known to be South Yorkshire’s most popular 10k. In each of the previous 10 years the race has sold out ahead of time, with the 2,200 places for 2015 and 2016 snapped up In less than 36 hours.

In what was the first Sunday of the festive season, runners descending upon Loxley Valley were treated to crisp, calm and relatively warm conditions for the 10k’s 24th staging. McColgan established an early lead and lengthened this throughout to cross the line in 32:30, smashing Debbie Robinson’s 12 year course record by 1 min 21 secs.

The Olympian finished first female and sixth overall, with Julie Briscoe (34:39) her closest competitor. McColagan, who took away a cheque of £1000 for her performance, tweeted: “Loved the percypud 10k this morning. 20s PB, course record by 80s & topping the UK rankings! Could have done with a few less hills though.”

In the men’s competition, Mohammed Abu-Rezeq, enjoying a similarly successful year with victories at Loch Ness Marathon and Leeds Half Marathon, ran a sub 30 to close his 2016 in style. The Altrincham runner finished in 29:57, with Gareth Lowe (31:46) and Jonathan Shields (32:07) taking second and third. Mid-point in the field was Christopher Wood in 53:04 , while the last runner came home in 1:26:34.

A statement on the Steel City Striders website read: “Many thanks everyone that ran today to make it another successful Percy Pud race.  Big kudos to all the volunteers and marshals who gave up their time to help, it is very much appreciated by everyone at the club.  The race couldn’t be what it is without you.”
