Double Delight For Dumfries

23 SEP2011

Dumfries Half-Marathon

This weekend's Dumfries half marathon will mark a milestone for Dumfries Running Club as they celebrate their 30th anniversary. In what will be a double cause for commemoration, the club has teamed up with Macmillan Cancer Support as the charity celebrates its 100th year.

Sunday's race (September 25) starts in the historic Crichton Grounds and heads along the Bankend road towards Caerlaverock Castle. The route takes in some fantastic views of Criffel Hill and the River Nirth as the runners make their way to the finish at Kingholm Park.

Race organiser Danny Queen said he was delighted the club could share their milestone with the charity, commenting: "With this being Macmillan's 100th anniversary year, it is a great honour to be raising money for such an important charity."

With an expected turnout of 300 runners, Danny expects there to be a great atmosphere surrounding the whole event, adding: "It is a nice coincidence that Dumfries Running Club also has its 30th half marathon anniversary this year. This gives added reason for a great double celebration."

The event begins at 11am, with a pre-race warm up organised by Bannantyne's Health Club. For those looking to set a sub 2-hour time, the club have also allocated pacers to help runners reach their target. Prizes will be awarded for the top three, comprehensive senior, veteran, and fastest team during the day. T-shirts and medals will be given to all those that finish the race.

While the race has almost reached capacity, there are a few spaces available. For more information, refer to the Dumfries Running Club website. If you would like to take part in a race to support Macmillan Cancer Care, refer to the charity's Running in the UK section to find an event near you.
