Deadline Looms For Loch Ness Marathon

Entries for this year's Baxter's Loch Ness Marathon will close at midnight tonight. But it's not just marathon runners that need to act now as entries for the 10k, the 10k Corporate Challenge, and the River Ness 5k, have also been allocated the same deadline.

The event, which takes place on Sunday, October 2, has become one of the most anticipated in the running calendar due to its iconic setting. The course begins on the south-eastern shores of Loch Ness, across the River Ness, and into the centre of Inverness, the capital city of the Highlands.

The 2010 competition drew in over 8,600 runners from across 41 countries, with in excess of £660,000 raised for charity. Last year's marathon saw Ethiopian Tomas Abyu of Salford Harriers victorious with a time of 2:20:50, while Dinknesh Mekash, also of Ethiopia, set a course record of 2:46:39 in the women's race.

To mark what will be the 10th anniversary for the competition, runners intending to participate in the 2011 event, and who have completed all previous nine Loch Ness Marathons, are invited to register for a unique memento at the finish of this year's run.
